I have to admit that blogger is my favorite platform though many webmasters can not support me on this. But there is day blogger went down, and to tell you the truth, that is the worst day of my life.
It was May 12th 2011 when people using blogger woke up to an unexpected occurrence. I did not realize it at first since i logged in into my account without any problem and i posted some new posts. However, i realized that my blog was not updating.
But that was not the main problem, what scared to me death was the fact that my blog was looking different from what i knew. It had a different title and different content on it, content which i did not post. The sad fact was the all the changes i was making in my blogger dashboard were not taking effect.
I realized that i had lost all the powers to make changes on blog. This sacred me so much because that blog ranks number one in Google search results, moreover in a very competitive niche. I make some good dollars from that blog and losing it would be a very big blow for me.
I did not sleep that night, i wanted to reverse everything to normal but i realized that there was nothing much i could do. What hit me so hard was the fact that some one else had registered my blog. We were now to owners, but the other person had more powers than me because he could make changes to my blog.
There was no better place to turn too than the Blogger help forum, I realized that blogger had made some updates but things did not turn out well for them.
This is what blogger said in there own words “On Wednesday, May 11 at 10:00pm PDT, Blogger entered a one-hour scheduled maintenance period to make improvements to increase service reliability. Unfortunately, errors made during this period had the opposite effect.
We sincerely apologize for the impact of this incident on Blogger’s authors and readers”
I found out that many other blogger where have similar of different problems. The following posts where made at the blogger help forum.
“Blogger went down without warning around 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time today. Can someone from Blogger please provide an estimate or update on when our blogs will be available again? Thanks.”
“I haven’t been able to sign in to my blog since 12 May and today (13 May) the last entry I made on May 11 disappeared. Anyone else have this problem? What’s going on?”
“I started my blog yesterday and uploaded 20 or so entries i had written beforehand. And deleted them from my laptop as they were published. Also the whole blog doesn’t exist anymore. It says my blog name is available for registration. Doesnt this mean all that writing is gone forever?”
It was also time for me to tell blogger that i had a bigger problem. I made my voice hear with near tears. This is what i wrote to blogger
“Hullo, My blog is showing on 2 URLs, It looks like some one has registered the same blog address as mine
My blog is the number one site in *****, when you check Google. But i have got a problem. It looks like some one has registered a blog using the same address as mine but under the names “Life for Me”, yet my blog had a different title
My blog still shows in the dashboard, when i check the posts, they are all there, but when i try to open any of the posts i get this reply
“Page not found
Sorry, the page you were looking for in the blog jobs for me does not exist”
My dashboard page elements are still intact, but when i check the url, i see different things. I am the only author on the blog, i have checked the permission tab and i am still the only author with admin privileges.
Someone please help me, many people in Uganda use this blog to find jobs and they have been left out at the moment”
What hit me hard was the message i got from a blogger rep. He was telling me that i was not the true owner of the blog and he listed the new owner as the real owner. But i proved to him that i was the real owner of the blogger and he understood.
The blogger posted an update, this is what it said “We are very sorry that users are unable to publish to Blogger right now. We have rolled back the maintenance release from last night and as a result, posts and comments from all users made after 7:37 am PDT on May 11, 2011 have been removed. Again, we apologize that this happened and our engineers are working hard to return Blogger to normal and restore your posts and comments. We will post a report once this work is complete.
-The Blogger Team”
The problem spread to the next day and each minute, i was losing money.
After long hours of hours from the blogger side, my blog came back to me, though i had lost my recent posts. I was very glad that blogger had finally returned my blogger. I sent then a thank you message.
Blogger outlined how they solved the whole issue like this ”
After several hours of examining different strategies to address the data problems we decided to restore Blogger data from our backup systems. First we had to restore the data from backups to our serving infrastructure and then we had to recover all the posts, pages, and comments that had been made since the backup was taken”
They even sent this apology to the blogger users “Blogger users have spent countless hours creating blogs that are amazing, creative, important, and personal. Those hours have weighed heavily on us, and for all the anxiety and frustration that this incident caused some Blogger users, we sincerely apologize.”
I think you can now see why i will always love blogger. i do not think that any platform would be as good as blogger when such a problem comes up. Blogger is free and good. I Love you blogger
