Sitemaps are very important for traffic and Google also recommends adding them. Well, if Google tells you to do something, just go ahead do it.
Adding a Blogger sitemap
To add Google sitemap for your blog, you must have a Google Webmaster Tools account. If you do not have one, you should not panic because it is a very account.
If you have just created your Google Webmaster Tools account, you will need to click “Add site” at the top so that you can verify that the site is really yours and be able to optimize that site with Google.
When you a logged in into your Webmaster Dashboard, click on site configuration at the left side. Then click on Site Maps and Click on Add sitemap.
The old method
Well, the old method of sitemap submission involves adding your feed url to the add sitemap section. The problem with that method, is that only the recent 26 articles will be crawled which might make Google to miss out on the old posts of your blog. It is not advised at all especially if you plan to have a big blog.
The better method
The best method to create a sitemap for blogger or to make a blogger sitemap, is by using the atom redirect.
When you click on add sitemap, just add this
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
That will generate a sitemap for 500 of your posts, if you have more than 500 posts, then also add this
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=500
That will generate a sitemap for more 500 posts to make it 1000 posts for your blogs. You should add both. But if your blog is too big, you should go on adding the sitemaps below
- atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1001&max-results=500
- atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1501&max-results=500
- atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=2001&max-results=500
- atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=2501&max-results=500
- atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=3001&max-results=500
However, you can use the Blogger site Map generator to make the work easier for you.
After adding a Blogger sitemap, you will notice that your pages are being indexed faster and it will give you more Google exposure
